Energy & Climate

Climate change presents Greece with both critical challenges and significant opportunities. The country must decarbonize to meet EU commitments, creating a pathway to lead in renewable energy production and establish itself as a green energy hub for Europe. At the same time, Greece is already facing severe climate impacts, including more frequent heatwaves, devastating wildfires, and severe flooding. Addressing these issues requires targeted and proactive action. Deon Policy Institute has identified three areas of focus:

  1. Advancing the green energy transition in Greece,

  2. Establishing Greece as a gateway for green energy in Europe, and

  3. Preparing infrastructure to withstand climate impacts.

The country needs to start actively adapting to climate change, by redesigning its infrastructure, adopting new technologies, and incorporating climate risk assessments in all decision making.

Combatting Wildfires using Technology

The summer of 2023 was devastating for Greece with regards to wildfires. As the world is getting hotter, Greece is increasingly at risk of wildfires. However, as technology is evolving, preventing, predicting, detecting, monitoring and fighting wildfires is changing. Those technologies include machine learning, satellite imagery, heat sensors, cameras and drones. That said, these types of technologies are not one size fits all. There are various criteria that determine their viability for a specific country. Those include country size, daily satellite coverage and resolution, forest type and density as well as local weather conditions. Deon Policy Institute is assessing the fit of these technologies for Greece and preparing recommendations for their implementation.

Bringing Nuclear Energy to Greece

Greece has become a leading nation in renewable energy. However, in order to fully decarbonize, the country will have to also find solutions to provide clean non-variable electricity (baseload). Small Nuclear Reactors present an incredible opportunity for the country, providing energy-dense, non-variable and reliable energy for the grid and specific use cases. Our Institute is currently undertaking an awareness campaign to inform the Greek public and relevant stakeholders of the potential roles this form of energy may have in Greece’s energy mix and the benefits of this technology. In the long-run, our institute aims to have a critical role in bringing nuclear energy to Greece.
